Quick Update

Just a quick update. This article was published on the Wofford homepage, but it is a random load, so here it is on our blog. If you click the title above it will take you to a link with pictures. We will work on getting pictures on this post as well.

Senior Circuit...Philips Leach
Philips Leach grew up in Gadsden, Ala., but moved to Birmingham right before high school. Wofford College isn’t a household name in that part of the world, but it certainly is now in the Leach household.
“I chose Wofford for a variety of reasons,” says Leach. “I was recruited by the previous (soccer) coaching staff and asked to come for an official visit. I knew Wofford was a great academic school and I enjoyed the small school atmosphere. Also, I knew I wanted to get away from home for college, so a combination of these things made my decision easy.”
Aside from being on the soccer team, he also volunteers for the Wofford Math Academy.
“I have enjoyed being a mentor and tutor for the elementary school kids,” he says.
Like most soccer players, Leach is goal oriented. That helped him determine a major academically.
“When I came to Wofford I knew I wanted to major in something dealing with business,” he says. “I chose finance because I am strong in math and thought it would lead to a number of different job opportunities after graduating.”
Speaking of which, that day is approaching. With but one more year to go, the time to start making plans for the next step in life is, too.
“I am not sure yet what the future holds,” says Leach. “I have a summer internship with the Charlotte Bobcats in their finance department, and have enjoyed it so far. I would like to stay involved in sports after I am finished playing. I will most likely pursue a job in a professional sports organization next year.”
For now, he looks forward to one more year of memories. He has two pretty good ones to try and top.
“One of my favorite memories was beating Furman 1-0 last fall,” he says. “It was the first time we had beaten them since 1982 and our first Southern Conference win of the season. Also, beating College of Charleston 1-0 as I scored my first career goal is something I will never forget.”

NSCAA Coaching Clinic

Wofford College this last week has been host to the National Soccer Coaching Association of America (NSCAA)

There were 96 coaching candidates from 16 states and 2 countries in attendance.

The NSCAA had both the National Diploma Course and the Advanced National Course this week.

The Picture above shows the candidates evaluating a scrimmage between two high school age CESA teams.

Andy Kiah has, as always, has done a phenomenal job with the soccer practice field as evidenced by the picture above and by the response of the coaching staff here instructing the course.

"The fields are absolutely phenomenal. The best we’ve been on, bar none.”

--Paul Payne (NSCAA Staff Instructor, Vice President, and head men's coach at University of Bloomsburg (PA)

In attendance was Wofford's very own Graduated and last year's captain Haskins Howeton

Below is a picture of Peter Gooding instructing some candidates in the National Diploma Course.
