Thanks to all the friends and family who came out Tuesday night to support the Terriers. After a sloppy first ten minutes we believe that we showed that we can play with the best teams in the nation. Wofford 2 UNCG 2

Click the title for a full write up.

We played to a 2-2 tie tonight against the Spartans from UNCG. We stared off the scoring at the 14th minute mark on a one time volley from Kentrell Owens who was played in behind on a wonderful chip by Yakov Rubinchik. The second goal came around the 30 minute mark off a cross from Moe Kellie that then bounced around the box. After a few shots and a couple by Wilson Hood, Branson Hyatt found himself on the end of a Greensboro save and finished the opportunity to make it 2-0 Wofford. UNCG made it 2-1 7 minutes in to the second halve. After a couple chances by both teams, Greensboro found themselves on the end of a second service that turned into a flick header that tied the score at 2-2.

We are proud of the boys for some exciting and quality soccer and look forward to our next game, away against NC State on Tuesday night.

Wofford 1 Carson Newmann 0

Wofford played their second and final pre-season game of 2009-2010 campaign last Monday night at Snyder Field. Wofford started off with a strong first 20 minutes of the game. The Junior from Charlotte, NC then turned the corner and played a ball across the box. On the other end of the cross was a diving Mac Gambill, Richmond, Va. The ball went to the back post off of Mac Gambill's diving header. Wofford 1 Carson Newmann 0. Later on in the half Kentrel Owens would look to tally the scoreboard for the second time in the game and did, but the he was ruled offsides and the goal was called back.
The second half was well played by both teams, with a solid defense from Wofford College. A couple of more chances for the Terriers but none of them to be realized. Wofford was called for offsides on two break aways and had another goal called back for a foul in the box before the goal was scored.
Thomas Hunter again played 60 minutes in the net for the Terriers and continued his streak of zero goals against, dating back 10/28/08 when he was scored on by Georgia Southern. Andrew Drennan played the last 30 in goal and did well in a challenge coming off his line against Omar Cooke saving an opportunity and holding on to the lead for Wofford College.
Wofford begins the regular season with a game against East Tennessee State at Johnson City. The game is on September 1st at 5pm. The Terriers look to make up for last year's 2-0 defeat to the Buccaneers which was played at Wofford.

Quick Update

Just a quick update. This article was published on the Wofford homepage, but it is a random load, so here it is on our blog. If you click the title above it will take you to a link with pictures. We will work on getting pictures on this post as well.

Senior Circuit...Philips Leach
Philips Leach grew up in Gadsden, Ala., but moved to Birmingham right before high school. Wofford College isn’t a household name in that part of the world, but it certainly is now in the Leach household.
“I chose Wofford for a variety of reasons,” says Leach. “I was recruited by the previous (soccer) coaching staff and asked to come for an official visit. I knew Wofford was a great academic school and I enjoyed the small school atmosphere. Also, I knew I wanted to get away from home for college, so a combination of these things made my decision easy.”
Aside from being on the soccer team, he also volunteers for the Wofford Math Academy.
“I have enjoyed being a mentor and tutor for the elementary school kids,” he says.
Like most soccer players, Leach is goal oriented. That helped him determine a major academically.
“When I came to Wofford I knew I wanted to major in something dealing with business,” he says. “I chose finance because I am strong in math and thought it would lead to a number of different job opportunities after graduating.”
Speaking of which, that day is approaching. With but one more year to go, the time to start making plans for the next step in life is, too.
“I am not sure yet what the future holds,” says Leach. “I have a summer internship with the Charlotte Bobcats in their finance department, and have enjoyed it so far. I would like to stay involved in sports after I am finished playing. I will most likely pursue a job in a professional sports organization next year.”
For now, he looks forward to one more year of memories. He has two pretty good ones to try and top.
“One of my favorite memories was beating Furman 1-0 last fall,” he says. “It was the first time we had beaten them since 1982 and our first Southern Conference win of the season. Also, beating College of Charleston 1-0 as I scored my first career goal is something I will never forget.”

"The fields are absolutely phenomenal. The best we’ve been on, bar none.”

--Paul Payne (NSCAA Staff Instructor, Vice President, and head men's coach at University of Bloomsburg (PA)

Nick Schuermann's Goal against Appalachian State in a 2-1 double OT loss

2009 Class

SPARTANBURG, SC – Wofford College men’s soccer coach Ralph Polson has announced that Turner Almond, Blair Gaines, Taylor Grim, Alex Hutchins, and Eddie Nam have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Terriers in the fall of 2009.

The five student-athletes come from a variety of locales, including two from Tennessee and one each from North Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia. The group includes three midfielders, a defender and a forward. They will join a Terrier squad this fall that will have lost five seniors from last year’s team to graduation, but still returns a core nucleus of nine starters off of the 2008 team.

“We lost a solid group with last year’s seniors, so we know there are big shoes to fill,” said Ralph Polson. “This is a group that can come in and make us better right away. We think these freshmen will join our returning players to make up another talented team with speed, athleticism and a competitive drive that will help us become more successful in the Southern Conference and in the southeast.”

Turner Almond is a midfielder from Shelby, North Carolina. He was a four-year starter at Shelby High School. He was named Southwest 2A/3A Player of the Year and received all-state honors this season. Almond was named all-conference and all-region the last two seasons as he scored 83 career goals with 42 assists. He will play in the East-West All-Star game this summer. He is also the starting defensive midfielder for North Meck Soccer Association’s Under-18 Academy Team. In addition, he was lettered four years as the kicker for the football team, earning all-conference honors in 2008.

“Turner is an extremely athletic and hard-working player,” Polson said. “He’s committed to the game and committed to taking his game to the next level. He should come in and push our returning players right away, and we think the future is very bright for him.”

Blair Gaines is a midfielder from Huntsville, Alabama. He lettered two years at Huntsville High School. He is also the starting forward for Huntsville Soccer Club team, which won two state championships. Gaines is a member of the Alabama State ODP team and the USYSA Region III ’91 ODP team. In March, he will represent Region III in an international tournament in Costa Rica.

“Blair has knack for scoring goals,” said Polson.” His speed and quickness should make him an asset to our program. He has the potential to make an impact early in his career.”

Taylor Grim is a defender from Oak Ridge, Tennessee. At Oak Ridge High School he lettered four years in soccer. He earned All-State honors as a junior, in addition to all-region and all-district honors as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He has career total of nine assists and eight goals at Oak Ridge. Starting defender for Discoveries Soccer Club team (Rock Hill, SC) and won SCYSA state championships in 2006, 2007, 2008. The team was a USYSA Region III quarterfinalist in 2007 and 2008.
Taylor Grimm HS

“Taylor is an extremely hard working defender that possesses speed and quickness,” said Polson. “He is very determined and committed to being successful. I’m looking forward to Taylor being in our program.”

Eddie Nam
is a midfielder from Marietta, Georgia. He is a four-year starter at The Lovett School and led the team in assists in 2007 and 2008. He was named captain as a junior and senior and has sixteen career assists with five goals. Nam played with the Norcross Fury Club Team, which won the 2008 state championship and also won the Region III Premier League.
Eddie Nam HS
Nam

“Eddie is a creative player that can make things happen and open up the game,” said Polson. “He is a very technical player and creates space well. We are excited with his commitment to Wofford.”

Alex Hutchins
is a forward from Knoxville, Tennessee. He is a four-year starter and senior captain at The Webb School. He earned all-state honors in 2007 and 2008. Hutchins is a starting forward for Knoxville Football Club Liverpool Soccer team, which was TNYSA State Champions in 2007 and 2008. He is also a member of the Tennessee State ODP team and the USYSA Region III ’91 ODP team. In March he will compete with his Region III team in an international tournament in Costa Rica.

“Alex is a strong physical presence up front that can not only score goals, but set up his teammates to score,” said Polson. “He could have an immediate impact on the success of our team.”

The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to Wofford College and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
